Super Sports Week

On Tuesday, June 7th, Div 1 went to Kings Links Golf Course in Ladner for a 90 minute session learning to drive, pitch and putt a golf ball.  We had a lot of fun and everyone showed respect for the instructors and golf course.  Thank you to the Miller family for the Dilly Bar treat when we arrived back at school.  They really hit the spot after our time in the sunshine.

On Thursday the Gr 7s set up their Sports Day stations so that our Gr 1 and 1/2 class could try them out.  This was to help Sports Day not be so scary and confusing for our younger students.  It meant moving a lot of equipment in and out of the school.  And then we had to do it all again on Friday!!  But the students did a tremendous job of creating, organizing, setting up and running the stations. Compliments came from parents, teachers, Mr. Chahal and, most importantly, the other students on the well-thought out, interesting activities.  Well done everyone!

Permissions slips for canoeing on Deas Island Slough on Tues Jun 14, and June 21  (9 am to 3 pm) should have come home Wed/Thurs, however I see a number of them still on desks today.  We will need parent drivers (and canoers, if you want).  If you see this blog on the weekend and can drive, but don't have the permission slip yet, please email me (pogloff@deltasd.bc.ca) so I know we can actually get all of the students to and from the park.

Also coming up next week, on Friday, June 17th, Constable Atkinson will be in to show the video "Behind the Blue Lens" and speak with the students about drugs and alcohol.

Fantastic Fine Arts Week

We had a fantastic Fine Arts Week (May 30 - Jun 3) where students from Division 1 really showed initiative, responsibility and talent.

Congratulations to our Holka Polka co-directors Emma and Jenny for a fabulous play.  Emma and Jenny selected the play, ran auditions, chose the cast and held weekly practices since Spring Break.  All that work resulted in two terrific performances on May 31 and raised over $150 for Children's Hospital.  The girls were assisted by cast members from Div 1: Ryley, Luke and Emmie, as well as Sound crew: Stephen, Kody, Eric and Emily and Lights crew: Emmie, Robbie, Kody and Harrison.  A big thank you also goes to students who helped set up the stage and chairs, and handed out programs.  Thank you also to the Manojlovic family for providing the pizza for our cast and crew party.

On June 3rd our Pebble Hill Talent Show in combination with the Parent Appreciation Tea was another opportunity for our students to show their Pebble Hill pride.  Performers included Emma and Jenny dancing, and Emily and Nolan on the piano as well as our MCs Lauren and Olivia. Div 1 Students really showed responsibility and service by setting up the Sound: Danielle, Sam, Robbie, and helping with the set up AND take down of the stage, tables, chairs, and table decorations in a very short time.  Many hands do make light work as the students so ably demonstrated.

May the Fourth Be with You!

Tomorrow is  May the Fourth Be with You Spirit Day.  Students may wear costumes or clothing that is related to Star Wars, Star Trek, fantasy science fiction or outer space, otherwise it's a uniform day.

This afternoon we enjoyed showing our social responsibility by participating in the Shoreline Clean-up as well as helping with our Kindergarten and Division 4 buddies.

Wed. May 11 is our Regional Track meet.  Pebble Hill teachers are responsible for organizing the track meet this year and the parents will run the Concession Stand.  This is a great money making opportunity for our school, so if you have any time at all, we'd appreciate volunteers to help out.  A notice was sent home yesterday with details.

Grade 7s have their Egypt project due May 19.  They will have two more classes this week to work on the items and then must complete the work at home. They are handing in work as they are completing it, but will also hand in the completed project by May 19.

Happy Easter Break

We've had an incredibly busy time since coming back from Spring Break.  We started with Bard on the Beach sessions where students acted out scenes of  The Tempest.  Unfortunately, with only five classes of preparation, the students didn't feel confident about performing the scenes in front of a large audience, but they did present a spirited monologue from the play.

The Carousel Theatre's presentation of Pharoah Serket and the Lost Stone of Fire was an excellent field trip to start off our Grade 7 unit on Ancient Egypt.  Thank you to our parent drivers:  Mrs. Garbutt, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Joyce, Mrs. Manojlovic,  and Mrs. Miller.

This week we welcomed Mrs. Garbutt into the classroom to instruct us on making Ukrainian eggs. The students were very excited about creating their egg masterpieces and did a fantastic job.  Many eggs went home today but others are at school because students forgot to bring containers.  Thank you to Mrs. Garbutt for gathering all the supplies and also to her team of parent helpers:  Mrs. Manojlovic, Mrs. Jackson, and
Ms. Klausen.

Next week we will be doing art in the style of Roy Henry Vickers with our aboriginal worker, Ms. Smith.

Today was busy with our last footy (Australian Football) lesson.  The students played an laugh-filled game and showed excellent learning of the footy skills.  Thank you to the PAC for sponsoring our footy instructor, Coach Mike McFarlane of the North Delta Junior Australian Football League.

Also, today,  six class members went off  to the Math Celebrations at Port Guichon.  Congratulations to Mark, Jonathan,  Nathan, Robbie, Emily, and Brendan for representing our school.

Last week an email was sent out about Learning to Learn, a summer program for students entering Gr 8 at SDSS.  The class runs from Aug 8-12 from 9-11 am or 11:15-1:15.  Cost is $82.  There are 20 spots available for each class, but they do fill up quickly. Registration is now open.  Contact the Delta School Board to register by telephone.

Happy Spring Break

The push through to Spring Break has been very successful.  The Grade 7 students worked very hard on their Olmec/Minoa/Mesopotamia persuasive essay while the Grade 6 students researched a country of their choice.  We also wrapped up the unit on Gr 7 Chemistry and Gr 6 Electricity.  Lots of reading, writing and learning!

When we come back on April 4th, we will start off with Bard on the Beach.  Our time is 9:00-9:45 am every morning Apr 4-7 and Apr 11-14 with a presentation on Apr 14. As well we will be going to see a play on Apr 8 which ties into our drama and Gr 7 Social Studies unit on Ancient Egypt.   Athletically we will be learning the basics of Australian Rules Football (Footy) for 4 sessions in April.  It will be very busy but we are committed to making the most of our academic time so that we can enjoy these extraordinary events.

Report cards will be going home April 14th.

Here are some initiatives open to our students that they might consider doing over Spring Break. I have spoken about these in class but you might remind your child if they're looking for something to do.

Curling on Tuesday Jan 25th

For our last curling time, we will be playing a game with students from Mr. Preddy's class.  We will be leaving the school at 12:30 and have a full 2 hour time slot to play.  Please make sure your child is dressed with warm clothes as this is a longer session.  Long pants for the girls are a good idea, rather than uniform skirts.

More information about the blog

Not accustomed to "blogging" I will try to post regularly.  I see the blog as a way for me to keep parents apprised of our classroom activities.  If you have suggestions, you will need to speak to me in person or send me an email (pogloff@deltasd.bc.ca) as the "Comment" link is not enabled.  If you would like to have the blog automatically go to your email, click on the "Followers" link along the right hand side of the post.  I believe this is working.  Please let me know if it isn't.

One last request -- does anyone have old magazines they'd like to donate to the classroom art supplies?  Our selection is rather picked over at this point, so new old magazines would be appreciated
